On Sunday, my elderly Portuguese neighbor used his snowblower to dig out the walkway between our houses. He didn't say a word, just as I was digging out Ludwig, he came towards me with the snowblower running. I thanked him profusely -- the snow was incredibly heavy and the last thing that I wanted was to have to digg out the sidewalk in addition to my car -- but he just smiled and waved his hand.
On Monday, an ambulance came mid-morning and the EMT's removed him on a stretcher and backboard.
For the last few days, I didn't see anyone over there at all. No wife, the other half of the house was empty too (the daughter lives upstairs). Yesterday some guy came and put some salt down on the icey driveway.
Finally, this morning, The wife was outside and I finally spoke to her (she literally speaks 3 words of english, but with a little portuguese and lots of hand gestures, we got the message across). He fell and hit his head and will be in the hospital until Monday. At least he didn't have a heart attack (which was my fear). |
