My Treo bit the dust on Sunday morning. I knew the second that if fell from my hand (which was all of a foot from the ground), that that was going to be one drop too many over it's 2 year, 3 month and 14 day lifespan with me. It turned on again straight away, but in the following 12 hours, I think that whatever life it had left in it disappeared. In the end, I could turn it on only by removing and reinserting the battery, use the touch screen, but only to mouse around with the pointer and "type" with the on-screen keyboard, but the actual keyboard was pretty dead, except for the U and the N (which means I could write nun, but not much more). It wouldn't make or receive calls, so as a phone and internet device, it really wasn't doing me much good.
So, dreading having to deal with the provider and the store, I trudged off to Harvard Square. It was, actually, a decent experience. They tried to help me with the existing phone (and we determined that indeed it was beyond repair) and then gave me an ok "trade in" price for a new Treo. Yes, I had to resign up for another contract, but seeing Verizon is the only place that supports the Treo that I like, that wasn't a big deal and overall I have been very happy with the Verizon Wireless service. The people at the store were efficient and nice and didn't really upsell me (of course, I was already looking to buy one of the more expensive things there, so what would they do, convince me that I needed a $600 Crackberry?) All in all, it took under an hour, including the walk to and from Harvard Square and then thanks to the ActiveSync software, my new Treo was up and running with all my data restored in another 3 minutes after getting home.
I think that this is the first time that I am ever writing something positive about a cell phone provider. Go figure. |
