wave

Right now, the death toll of the tidal waves in Southeast Asia stands at 116,000. Of course, that will rise again. It is actually quite difficult to imagine how many people ‘116,000’ are. I was trying to put that into rational numbers and somehow I can’t. In some places, 1 in 4 people died. That is really unfathomable. I tried to imagine 1 in 4 people that I know not being there and that was even tough (and I don’t know that many people, really).

What also seems strange to me are the reports that no one can find any dead animals. Now, I know that birds can fly out of the way and that many (i.e. monkeys) are in the trees, but somehow it still seems strange that there aren’t a lot more dead animals around.

This small wave is from Schoodic Point last week in Maine, up at Acadia. It was freezing cold.
